JSC "Astana – Regional Electric Grid Company"
The history of JSC "Astana – Regional Electric Grid Company" spans over 40 years, beginning in 1980. It was then, on the basis of the Akmola City District Electric Grid, that the enterprise "City Electric Networks" was established in accordance with Order No. 244 of the Production Energy Association EO "Tselinenergo" dated August 6, 1980. In 2010, the enterprise was granted the status of a regional-level electric grid company and was renamed JSC "Astana - Regional Electric Grid Company."
The main task of the company is the transmission and distribution of electric energy, as well as the development and implementation of measures aimed at ensuring reliable electricity supply to consumers in the capital.
The scope of JSC "Astana – REC" operations includes 102,459.9 conventional units, comprising: 143.436 km of 220 kV overhead power lines, 207.908 km of 110 kV overhead power lines, 365.71 km of 10 kV overhead power lines, 583.558 km of 0.4 kV overhead power lines, and 12.3 km of 220 kV cable lines, 147.062 km of 110 kV cable lines, 622.028 km of 20 kV cable lines, 2,432.732 km of 10 kV cable lines, 20.076 km of 6 kV cable lines, 1,239.365 km of 0.4 kV cable lines. In total, the company operates and maintains 1,746 substations, including 3 substations at 220 kV, 29 substations at 110 kV, and 1,714 distribution points and transformer substations at 20/10/0.4 kV.
The company is equipped with modern dispatch and technological management systems, a solid fleet of specialized vehicles and machinery, as well as mobile diesel power plants. The production departments have access to state-of-the-art stationary and mobile laboratories, including two mobile high-voltage laboratories "Compact-CITY," which allow for the rapid identification of faults and damage locations in cable networks up to 110 kV. Additionally, the company has its own facilities to accommodate all production units, laboratories, equipment, and specialized machinery, enabling it to promptly address tasks assigned to the company.
The annual growth in electrical loads is driven by construction development and, of course, improvements in the quality of life for city residents. In this regard, the company's primary objective is to organize reliable and efficient operation of the city’s power system. With the active participation of the company’s specialists, several key facilities have been commissioned, including 110 kV overhead power lines and substations such as "Koktem-2," "Kirova-2," "Chubary," "Turan," "Bayterek," "Airport-2," and "Olymp"; as well as the 220 kV city ring with substations "Shygys," "Dostyk," and "Batys." All facilities are equipped with modern electrical equipment from leading global manufacturers. Another aspect is the organizational structure of the production units, which optimally meets today's requirements.
The end of the autumn-winter period in the energy sector is marked by the implementation of activities under the capital repair plan, maintenance schedules for substation and power line equipment, and other types of work aimed at reducing the likelihood of technical failures in the electric grid, localizing issues, and promptly addressing damages.
A separate focus of JSC "Astana – REC" is its own investment program aimed at modernizing distribution points (DP), transformer substations (TS), and the 10/0.4 kV network. As practice shows, the implementation of this program has already reduced the accident rate on power grids by nearly 10%. Another promising direction for the development of the city’s electric power industry is the improvement of electric grid management systems based on the Smart Grid concept, also known as active-adaptive grid or "smart grid." The second focus is the introduction of an automated commercial electricity metering system (AMR) at the consumer level.
As the capital develops, so do its energy enterprises. Today, "Astana – REC" is not only about modern equipment and cutting-edge technologies but, first and foremost, about its 2,007 specialists who form a cohesive team. Among them, more than 52% hold higher education degrees, while 24% have secondary specialized education. One of the key aspects of the company’s personnel policy is encouraging professional growth and improving the qualifications of each employee.
The use of traditional operational methods, decades of experience, and the implementation of advanced information technologies are the main criteria ensuring that JSC "Astana - Regional Electric Grid Company" maintains a stable process of electricity transportation while reducing commercial and technical losses. Most importantly, the company ensures reliable and high-quality electricity supply to the capital’s consumers.
